I just got back from my Mom’s house and she gave me my uncle’s old Panasonic! I’m so excited, but I don’t really know what is the best course of action in restoring it to its original condition. I’ve already started disassembling the easy stuff (cranks, wheels, stem and bars) and cleaning it with Never-Dull. I need to replace the wrap on the bars as they are badly deteriorated as well. The tires and tubes need to be replaced and the brake pads too. Is there anything anyone else has done to restore their 30+ year old bike back to excellent condition? I want to keep it as original as I possibly can because this bike really means a lot to me. Are there any places I can still get original components like the brakes and derailleurs? I guess I’m just really excited and wanted to show people my bike :-) Can’t wait to get it fixed so I can ride it!

Congrats. Sounds like you’re already having lots of fun with it. It is hard to tell from the photo but the bike doesn’t look to be in very bad shape at all. I good clean up and repacking of the various bearings would likely take care of it… along with new tubes, tires and bar wrap.

For parts, keep an eye on eBay or Craigslist. That is part of the fun in restoring older Panasonics for me. Scavenger hunting for the right part it sort of rewarding. ;-)
