While 1986 wasn’t the first year for the DX-3000, it was in my opinion one if not the most desirable year. The black and yellow color scheme was new for ’86 and it really made the bike stand out. The components were by no means high end but they were certainly respectable for a sport rider.

[gallery ids="1878,1881,1879,1882,1880,1895,1898,1884,1893,1885,1883,1886,1887,1897,1900,1889,1890,1891,1892,1896,1888,1894,1899,1901,1902"]

The nice looking specimen below was shared with us by Jeff. Jeff found this bike in need of some care and restoration and the end result is what you see below. Fantastic job!

What Can I say, when I came across this rough gem, as the saying goes, “Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder”, I couldn’t resist on taking the challenge of bringing this bike as Darin called it, “Panasonic Mutt”, and turning it into a prized contender. It is currently a work in progress indeed, combining time and funds, this “Mutt”, should be ready to ride soon!

Before Picture shown with 27 chrome fork, 27 inch wheels, mixed match brakes, Custom handle bar, dia compe non-aero brake levers, Suntour X-1 mtb front derailleur, Exage rear derailleur and plastic pedals.
Only original component is the Shimano 600 Ultegra Bio-Pace Crankset.

So far I have accumulated plenty of parts to piece together and soon will present to my “Panasonic Mutt”.

P.S.
Thank you Darin, for the knowledge and encouragement in bringing this Panasonic back to its former Glory.

After pictures coming soon with Shimano Dura Ace / 600 Ultegra Components. I’m doing my best attempt to go all Dura Ace, but that requires deep deep pockets.. so little by little moving towards that. haha

The 1986 Team Japan is a rare bicycle by any standards, and we’re lucky enough to have acquired our second example for the collection. If you are familiar with the Team Japan then you know that the frame was constructed with Columbus SL/SP tubes and that it was equipped with Suntour Superbe Pro components. This example is a bit different. It has a Suntour Superbe Pro headset as well as hubs but the rest of the components have been changed to either Shimano Sante or Shimano 600. At first I wasn’t sure how I would like that but upon riding it, I must say the result is quite nice. I love how these Columbus tubed Panasonics ride, and the addition of classic reliable Shimano components really works well here. Added bonus that Shimano Sante was used for many of the components. The only thing I would do is swap out the cranks and brakes for Sante and then it would be an absolute stunner. Even so, I believe you’ll find it to be rather stunning to look at as it is.

Agreed. Cinelli is always a good substitute. I was thinking Nitto or perhaps SR in order to keep the bike mostly Japanese based however it will have Mavic rims so it isn’t as if the purity would be compromised by using a Cinelli stem. 😉

Professional 7000 frames and or bicycles are among the most rare I’ve seen. The last (and only) one I saw for sale was a 1979 model in Arizona in late April of this year. I went back to check the ad and it has been deleted. It was a large frame if I recall… around 60cm.
